LA AUTORA Y SU OBRA
Peral S. Buck es una famosa escritora americana. Aunque nació en Estados Unidos, se crió en China porque sus padres trabajaban allí como misioneros. Vivió en este país hasta que estalló la revolución china, por tanto le interesaba mucho la cultura china.
ARGUMENTO
La historia trata de la promoción social de la familia de un granjero chino de la pobreza a la opulencia durante un periodo de aproximadamente setenta años.
LOS PERSONAJES
El personaje principal, Wang Lung, es un granjero chino que ama tanto su tierra que invierte todo lo que gana trabajando en comprar más tierra, pero cuando llega la sequía él y su familia tienen que emigrar al sur para sobrevivir. Tras abandonar el hogar, la vida se torna más dura, pero finalmente consiguen regresar a casa y la familia de Wang Lung se enriquece.
CONCLUSIÓN
Creo que, en esta novela Pearl S. Buck muestra las diferencias sociales entre ricos y pobres y el rol social de la mujer china.
Por encima de todo, había un contraste profundo entre los ricos, como la acaudalada familia Hwang, cuya esclava, O-lan se convirtió en la esposa de Wang Lung y los pobres. Estos graves problemas sociales condujeron a la revolución china.
Por otra parte a las mujeres de clase alta y de clase media se les obligó a vendarse los pies con una tela muy apretadaparaembellecerlos mientras las mujeres de clase baja tuvieron que trabajar duro no solo en los campos sino también en casa, realizando las tareas del hogar y cuidando de sus hijos y de sus maridos, como la mujer de Wang Lung. En aquella época a las mujeres se les consideraba solo un medio de tener hijos e inferiores a los hombres.
Otro problema era el analfabetismo. Entonces la mayoría de los chinos no sabían ni leer ni escribir porque no podían permitírselo y por tanto los ricos se hicieron cada vez más ricos y se explotaba a los granjeros porque éstos no podían escapar de tal situación.
Sin embargo, en aquel tiempo, algunos profesores y estudiantes se interesaron por el comunismo e intentaron ayudar a los pobres, alentándolos a rebelarse contra los ricos como se muestra en esta obra.
Aunque la novela resulta siempre una historia sencilla , se basa en conceptos contrapuestos como hombres contra mujeres, riqueza frente a pobreza, Norte contra Sur, Analfabetismo contra cultura, periodos de buenas cosechas y periodos de hambruna y engloba temas universales como amor, odio, codicia, generosidad , orgullo y bondad.

THE AUTHOR AND HIS PLAY
Peral S. Buck is a well-known American writer. Although she was born in the United States, she grew up in China because her parents worked there as missioaries. She lived in this country until the Chinese revolution worked out, so she was very interested in Chinese culture.
THE PLOT
The story is about the social change of a Chinese farmer family from poverty to wealth in a period of nearly seventy years.
THE CHARACTERS
The main character, Wang Lung, is a Chinese farmer who loves his land so strongly that he invests all the money he earns working, in buying more land, but when the drought arrives he and his family have to go to the south to survive. After leaving home, life becomes harder, but they finally manage to return home and Wang Lung’s family become a wealthy one.
CONCLUSION
I think that, in this novel Pearl S. Buck shows the social differences between the rich and the poor and the social role of Chinese woman.
Above all, there was a deep contrast between the rich, such as the wealthy family Hwang, whose slave, O-lan became Wang Lung’s wife and the poor. These serious social problems led to the Chinese revolution.
On the other hand, upper class women and middle class ones were both forced to bind a cloth very tightly round their feet to make them beautiful while the working class ones had to work hard not only in the lands but also at home doing the household and taking care of children and husbands such as Wang Lung’s wife. In those days women were considered only a way of having children and inferior to men.
Other problem was the illiteracy. In those days most of the Chinese people didn’t know neither how to read nor how to write because they couldn’t afford it and so, the rich became richer and richer and the farmers were exploited because they couldn’t escape from that situation. However, some of the teachers and students at that time became interested in communism and tried to help poor people by encouraging them to rebel against the rich as it is shown in this novel.
Although the novel is always a simple, human story , it is based on opposite ideas and people, such a men versus women, richness versus poverty, North versus South, Illiteracy versus culture, good crops periods versus famine ones and it envolves universal themes such as love, hatred, greed, generosity, pride and kindness.
